Robbins shares his own advice
In his book MONEY Master the Game: 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom, Robbins shares his own advice. and advice from legendary financial experts on how to become financially successful.
His ability to distil practical and easy-to-learn lessons from complex financial concepts is just one of the reasons why Robbins finished in the 2015 GOBankingRates “Best Money Professional” contest. with Ally Bank organized.
During that contest, Robbins shared his best money tips with GOBankingRates. Keep reading for more money tips Robbins has shared over the years.
Don’t lose money
This is the most important principle in investing that Robbins shares with GOBankingRates. “While so many of us are focused on making money, most of the most successful investors on the planet are obsessed with not losing money.” He was also right. In fact, his advice also resonates with the advice of the great investor Warren Buffett, who made the #1 rule of never losing money.
Taking small risks for big rewards
“While nothing comes without risk, every money guru in the world will tell you that one of the most important components of your portfolio is finding investments with disproportionate risks and rewards,” said Robbins.
To do that, you have to apply the 1 to 5 rule. According to him: “For every dollar you risk, you have the potential to make $5. You might be wrong 4/5 times, but as long as you’re right on the 5th time, you’ll level them all. It all involves taking small risks for big rewards.”
What matters is that what you hold is not what you earn
“In investing we are often taught to focus on returns,” says Robbins. “But what matters is what you hold, not what you earn. And if your portfolio isn’t tariff-efficient, you’re probably not holding as much as you should.”
In fact, he argues, taxes can rapidly erode your earnings over time if you don’t structure your investment portfolios with tax-friendly investments. You might consider working with a professional such as a financial analyst or financial planner to do this.
Diversify to reduce risk and maximize return
Most investors know that diversifying your portfolio reduces risk because you don’t put all your money in one investment. But diversification doesn’t mean indiscriminately investing in stocks and bonds.
One way to do the diversification you need is to invest in low-cost funds. “With these types of funds, you’ll have broad exposure to low-cost securities,” Robbins said.
Stop mindless spending
Want to get the most out of a dollar? Then you need to “spend on things that can rapidly increase your quality of life and stop spending on things that don’t add value to your life,” Robbins told GOBankingRates.
Think about how you spend on things you don’t need to enjoy life, he says. For example, spending $40 a week going out to dinner instead of enjoying a cheap meal at home with friends can save up to $2000 per year. If you instead invested that money and earned an 8% annual return over 40 years, you would have more than half a million dollars, he said.
Focus on results instead of to-do lists
Recently, LinkedIn asked Robbins to share his secrets to being more productive, saying that people should bury their to-do lists deep.
You might think that an authoritative and capable leader might have a way of keeping track of what needs to be done. But he wrote: “The biggest problem with to-do lists is that focusing only on the things you need to get done doesn’t guarantee that you’re actually making real progress.”
You have to figure out what you want, then focus all of your activities on getting there. “Continuing to manage your life with a to-do list only invites the constant imbalances and frustrations that come from knowing you are working hard but making no progress at all. really important areas of your life,” Robbins writes.
Implementation is power, not knowledge
It is important to always learn. And Robbins does it himself by looking for people who break the norm and show what’s possible. But you have to take the things you learn and put them into action.
“Make just a little progress every day or every week, and before you know it, your path to financial freedom will become clear,” he wrote in sentiment for MarketWatch in early 2015.
Realize what is working and what is not
As a business and life strategist, Robbins asks people to delve into what they want out of life.
Part of the process of figuring out the results we want to achieve includes recognizing what is working and what is not. “When it doesn’t work, change your method. And keep changing until you get what you’re committed to,” he told Success magazine.
This can apply to all other aspects of your life including finances. If your efforts to cut spending to save money don’t work, try something else. If your efforts to get rid of your debts aren’t producing the desired results, look for another strategy. The key here is to learn from your mistakes.
Follow effective strategies
To get what you want in life or in business, Robbins advocates following someone who has been successful. “They apply a set of strategies and those strategies work,” he told Success. “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to be successful.”
Don’t ruin your financial success
The first thing that stops people from getting what they want financially is self-sabotaging plans, says Robbins. They sabotage their own financial success because to some extent they believe it leads to hardship rather than pleasure.
They focus on the negative aspects of money, such as worrying about the taxes they will have to pay when they earn more.
“To eliminate self-sabotaging your financial plan, you have to change your core beliefs about money,” Robbins said in a video lecture. He thinks you should think about the hardship that not having money is causing you. Write it down, then write down the positive things that money has to offer to motivate you to change your mind.
