Top Books Recommended by Mark Cuban 2021

Mark Cuban is an American businessman and investor. He is the owner of the NBA basketball team – Dallas Mavericks, Magnolia Pictures, Landmark Theaters, and the president of AXS TV. Most recently, he is also one of the leading “sharks” in the popular reality show series Shark Tank. According to Forbes estimates, billionaire Mark Cuban currently owns a fortune of $ 4.1 billion.

Before getting the above fortune, he experienced countless failures. However, if you ask, he will say that past mistakes are not the problem.

Mark Cuban shared that people focus only on his enormous successes, such as when he sold his startup MicroSolutions in 1990 to CompuServe for $6 million, and nine years later he sold Broadcast.com to Yahoo for a price of 5.7 billion USD; but rarely talked about the problems he had before those billion-dollar deals.

His first failure came when he was a university student. At that time, he founded the bar Motley’s Pub, even under the legal drinking age himself, the summer before entering his senior year at Indiana college. According to the Dallas Morning News, the bar was later closed because it allowed underage guests to enter.

In 1981, after graduating from university, he continued to stumble with three consecutive times of voluntarily quitting or being fired:

When he first graduated from Indiana University, Mark Cuban got a job at Mellon Bank and eventually quit because he didn’t like the bank’s CEO.

Next, he worked for the TV repair company Tronics 2000, but that job also failed.

For the third time, he decided to start a business selling powdered milk. Still, whatever happens, Mark Cuban’s milk powder attracts every two customers, who are the parents of this 59-year-old billionaire.

Cuban later landed a sales job at the computer company Your Business Software but was fired for closing a deal without the CEO’s approval. However, that prompted him to found his computer systems company, MicroSolutions.

“No one asked me about my adventures at Mellon Bank, Tronics 2000, or trying to start a powdered milk business,” he writes in How to Win at the Sport of Business.

“They didn’t ask me about getting fired from Your Business Software. No one has ever asked me how it felt to start MicroSolutions or how impatient it was to start a business, hoping to surpass my previous efforts and succeed this time.”

Therefore, no matter how many ups and downs or failures you experience, never give up on your dreams and passions. Because no one will notice and understand all the ups and downs that you have had to go through.

Mark Cuban did not create this list directly, it was created by our team based on reviews recommended to read and shared on Mark Cuban’s social media platforms.

  • Standout syndicated columnist and CNN contributor Salena Zito, with veteran Republican strategist Brad Todd, reports across five swing states and over 27,000 miles to answer the pressing question: Was Donald Trump's election a fluke or did it represent a fundamental shift in the electorate that will have repercussions--for Republicans and Democrats--for years to come.
  • The history of the American electorate is not a litany of flukes; instead it is a pattern of tectonic plate-grinding, punctuated by a landscape-altering earthquake every generation or so. Donald Trump's electoral coalition is smashing both American political parties and its previously impenetrable political news media.
  • The political experts called the 2016 election wrong and in the wake of the 2016 election surprise, the experts have continued to blow it - looking to predict the coming demise of the President without pausing to consider the durability of the trends and winds that swept him into office.

Advice on personal financial management

First, pay off your debt and don’t buy things you can’t afford

“The best investment you can make is paying off your credit cards, paying off any debt you have,” Cuban said in an interview with MarketWatch.

If you had a student loan with an interest rate of 7 percent, you would have instantly earned 7 percent if you paid off that loan. It’s your instant profit, much safer than picking a stock or trying to pick real estate, or whatever it may be.”

Of course, credit cards have much higher interest rates, so there is a more significant benefit to being paid off. “Using a credit card is OK if you pay it off at the end of the month,” Cuban told a Money interviewer.

“Just realizing that 18 or 20 or 30 percent of you are paying off credit card debt will cost you a lot more than you can earn anywhere else.”

For loans that can’t be paid off quickly (like a mortgage or student loan, for example), he recommends choosing low-interest lenders during economic downturns to refinance.

Manage personal finances by saving one year of income

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Mark shared with Vanity Fair about saving income. He thinks we should try to save six months of income and keep it ready.

“If you don’t like your job at some point or you get laid off, or you have to move, or something happens, you’ll need at least six months’ worth of income,” he explains.

However, in today’s context, he advises people to save enough to cover expenses for one year. “Once you can save a year of expenses, then you can start investing and put it in something that can appreciate, like a low-cost mutual fund,” he said.

Venture capitals are fine, but they should only be 10% of the total

Cuban admits self-made millionaires and billionaires get there by taking calculated risks. So investing in something hazardous is fine if you only limit it to 10% of your total investments.

“If you are a real adventurer and you want to throw hail, you can take 10% and put it in bitcoin or stocks, but if you do, you have to pretend you lost your money. ” Cuban said in the same video on Vanity Fair. “It’s like collecting art; it’s like collecting baseball cards; it’s like collecting shoes.” In other words, “It’s a flyer, but I want to limit it to 10%.”

Buying things on sale is a smart way to manage your finances

Might you laugh at the feeling this is personal financial advice?

The answer is yes!” Cuban said. It’s hard to generate high rates of return in today’s investment environment, so you might be better off, say, buying two years’ worth of toothpaste if you find it 50% off.

“Saving 15 percent on $1,000 items that you know you will spend your money on will give you a better return on your money than making 15 percent in a year on a $1,000 investment dollars because you don’t have to pay taxes on it,” he explained in a blog post.

“Live like a student” is his advice to everyone about using money sparingly and choosing specific bargains. Tackling twenty percent might not be much to you now, but it will build a habit for you and will be helpful in significant numbers.

“Take advantage of deals on Amazon and other places where you can buy in bulk because there is also a way you can save 20-40% of your spending. And it’s also the best investment you can make,” Cuban said.

He says that being a “smart shopper” is more accessible than investing in the stock market.

Learn to negotiate in spending

According to Mark Cuban’s advice, you need to learn how to negotiate the price down (or in what’s colloquially called a bid) for the things that you buy. According to him, any product can negotiate, from a price or use a particular service.

Using cash can be a powerful negotiating tool; Cuban says: “I always tell people that, if you go out, you go to a yoga class, and they want to charge you $30.

Let’s try to negotiate it for $20.” The billionaire thinks that dealing in cash is a much better way to get your investment back.

Startup advice:

  1. Have passion. Don’t start a business if you’re not obsessed with the idea.
  2. You are determined to pursue. If you’ve prepared a plan to give up when your business crashes, you’re not reveling in the idea yet.
  3. Find like-minded people. Hire people you think they’ll love working at your company.
  4. Market research. Know how your company can make money and how you can sell your products/services.
  5. Understand the company’s core strengths and focus on developing them. Make them the best you can. If you can’t hire brilliant people for your core team, hire people who fit the company’s culture, but don’t ask for too high a salary.
  6. Enhance connectivity. Lunch is an opportunity to get out of the office and network. We have 24 hours in a day, and if someone loves what they do, they will do whatever they can to get it done.
  7. Open office setup. An open office helps everyone keep abreast of what’s going on at the company and marks employee energy high. If an employee needs privacy, have them use the door lock button in the restroom. The privacy should not be created for a startup company.

Mark Cuban says his biggest fear has always been to hire someone who is inclined to build his empire. “If an individual demands to fly first class or needs a personal secretary from the very beginning, I will resign immediately. These people will only create autocracy, authoritarianism that is harmful to your company,” Mark said.

  1. They are cost-effectively operating the company. If you’re tech-savvy, take on tech-related tasks. A startup needs only a few employees, so each employee should know how to do many things. It is the best way to run the company most cost-effectively.
  2. Maintain the operating pattern in the horizontal direction. In the early stages, if you build multiple levels of management and force your subordinates to report to your superiors, you will fail. Those are the operations of political organizations, not startups.
  3. Never hire a PR firm. A PR company will call or email you about publications you’ve read, shows you’ve watched, and websites you’ve browsed. These units all make their communication channels public. Then why don’t you do it directly?

Whenever you gather exciting information related to your field, send it directly to these agencies with a message introducing you and your company. Their job is to find new actors, so they are willing to hear about the company from the founder, not the advertising of the PR unit.

And once you connect with these units, always be ready to answer them at any time with information related to your field of specialization. Be a quality source; then, they will often find you.

  1. Create a happy atmosphere for employees. Take an interest in measuring the stress levels of your employees and regularly motivate and reward them.

One of the ways Mark Cuban used it at his first company, MicroSolutions, was to go around handshakes and sign each salesperson, $100 each when the company’s sales for that month exceeded their target. Depending on the company’s culture, you can invite people to eat, celebrate, go on a trip, etc., suggests Mark Cuban.
