Elon Musk’s productivity tips

Recently, a tweet on Twitter was widely shared, which mentioned tips to increase labor productivity. These tips are derived from Elon Musk’s email to employees of electric car company Tesla.

Justin Bariso is an author, speaker, and founder of the media consulting firm Insight. He once had the opportunity to have a short interview with billionaire Elon Musk, and the advice of this billionaire has had a profound impact on him. In particular, in just a few minutes, Musk has given countless valuable lessons for entrepreneurs.

While the audience for advice is Mr. Musk’s employees, other business owners can easily apply it to their employees. Here are 7 of SpaceX’s CEO’s suggestions to improve work efficiency.

Stop lengthy meetings

According to Elon Musk, meeting too much is the disadvantage of large companies and is getting worse. “Please omit any large meeting unless you are certain that it provides value to attendees.” Even if the meeting is valuable, he still recommends holding the forum for a short time instead of a long one.

Reduce meeting frequency

Meetings at companies are not only too long but too frequent, according to the Tesla boss. That’s why bosses should avoid regular meetings unless the matter is urgent. Elon Musk believes that the frequency of sessions will quickly decrease once critical issues are resolved.

Leave the meeting if you can’t contribute anything

In many places, skipping a session can be seen as disrespectful, but Mr. Musk thinks otherwise. It is those who do not contribute anything but still sit and participate that are rude.

“Get out of the meeting or hang up the phone if you are not adding any value. It’s not rude to let go, but to make someone sit back and waste their time is rude.”

Eliminate abbreviations, jargon that hinder communication

While Mr. Musk’s advice is for his employees, it holds for other companies as well. “Don’t use abbreviations or meaningless words for Tesa objects, software, or processes. In general, anything that requires explanation interferes with communication. We don’t want people to have to memorize a glossary to work at Tesla.”

Bypass the system when necessary

According to Mr. Musk, respecting the board system is not always good when it is necessary to announce something. He believes that reporting the news as quickly as possible is required to get the job done.

Encourage direct communication between departments.

“One of the main sources of problems is poor communication between departments.” Mr. Musk offered advice to allow the “free flow of information between all levels.”

He warned: “If to complete something between departments, an individual must talk to the manager, the manager communicates with the Director, the Director communicates with the vice president, the vice president communicates with the vice president with another Vice President who reports to a Director, the Director reports to a manager, the manager talks to the person in charge of the job, something super stupid happens.”

Prioritize your own experience

According to Musk, “if you follow a company policy that is not appropriate in a particular situation, that rule should be changed. In general, always take your own experience and common sense as a guide.”

Accept the pain

Elon Musk admits that starting a business is not something that everyone can do. This billionaire shared: “To be able to start the business that I mentioned here, the first thing you must have is a high threshold of suffering.”

When we first start a company, we will often think of good things and be optimistic. The Tesla CEO quotes one of his friends saying that starting a business is like eating glass and staring into the abyss. At that time, everything was great, and I was standing on top of happiness.

“Then you’ll have a bunch of problems, your fun, your happiness will be reduced,” Musk said. In the end, you will succeed if you overcome those sufferings, and if you don’t, you will fail… Tesla almost forgot, too, just a little more to forget. If you succeed, then after a long time, you will finally be happy again.”

Bariso also agrees with Musk because when he started his business, he did not anticipate the difficulties he would face. Often there are more failures than successes, but all of these mistakes are valuable lessons.

Don’t waste time improving things that don’t matter

When entering an existing market, our products or services need to be much better than the competition

Elon Musk advises that if you’re building a product or providing a service, it shouldn’t be just “slightly better” but must be perfect compared to the competition.

The self-made billionaire said: “When you enter an existing market, competing with big players, your products or services need to be much better than theirs. It can’t be just a little bit better; try to put yourself in the consumer’s position and think… If the new product doesn’t have a huge difference, you will always choose to buy brands’ products reliable”.

Remember how the iPod replaced the Walkman? How can iPhone replace Blackberry? Steve Jobs once said, “You have to have a breakthrough, not create a better similar product.”

Looking for Criticism

A good, thorough commentary on what you’ve done will make you feel as valuable as gold.

Most of us crave compliments and dread criticism. However, with Elon Musk, he encouraged people to seek criticism and criticism, especially from close friends. A good, correct comment on what we’ve done is worth as much as gold.

“Usually, your friends will know where you’re going wrong,” Musk said. But they don’t want to tell you because they don’t want to hurt you. This does not mean that your friends will always be correct. But usually, they’re right.”

The people closest and most sincere to us will always want us to succeed, and they will support us with all their might. Of course, they are also smart enough to tell us our weaknesses and what we need to improve on.

Sometimes, honest comments hurt us when we realize that what we do isn’t perfect. However, with a bit of sensitivity and subtlety, we will recognize that these are feedback to make us better.
